Have some cake

I have a recipe for apple cake that I think originally came from a friend of my mom's - It's yummy and easy and not too super sweet, by my standards, anyway! :) The recipe calls for a yellow cake mix and a can of apple pie filling, and last night I decided to give it a try in a chocolate cherry version. Turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself. Here are the 2 versions:

Apple Cinnamon CakeChocolate Cherry Cake
Batter:

1 box yellow cake mix
1 20 oz can apple pie filling

1 box devil's food cake mix
1 20 oz can cherry pie filling
3 eggs
3 tablespoons water
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Topping:
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon2 tablespoons cocoa
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
(or use all brown)
1/2 cup flour
  • Mix all batter ingredients together in a bowl. Do not overmix, just enough to get rid of the lumps.

  • Mix the topping ingredients together in another bowl. Pinch the butter in with your fingers until the topping has a sandy consistency.

  • Spread the batter in a greased and floured 13X9 pan. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the cake.Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes.

  • Enjoy!
